CORK’S dual star Briege Corkery hadn’t far to travel to lend her support to the launch of the 2018 Castletown Rally in Coppeen. Friends and neighbours in the local West Cork community gathered for the occasion last week.
‘We are encouraging people of all ages to come out and join us at 1.30pm on June 24th in Coppeen,’ said Joe McCarthy, chairperson of the Castletown fundraising committee.
‘Whether you would like to walk or cycle the event, join in the fun atmosphere and enjoy refreshments afterwards. And for the first time we are encouraging vintage car drivers to join us on the route also. We have various options for people depending on their preferred route distance,’ he added.
The committee is from the parish of Enniskeane but their fundraising reach goes as far as Kilmurry, Bandon, Dunmanway and beyond. It was set up over 36 years ago to support the needs of two local families who used the services of Enable Ireland. Through this event and a Christmas bazaar annually around €15,000 is donated to the charity.
Maria Desmond of Enable Ireland said: “We are honoured and grateful that the people of Castletown and surrounds have supported us for so many years.This is a great afternoon for all the family and not far from Cork city for those who’d like to travel to it. The development of our new Children’s Centre is underway in Curraheen so all support with fundraising is gratefully received.’
Enable Ireland is actively fundraising for a final €1.75m towards its €7.5m to build the state-of-the-art Children’s Services Centre on a new site in Curraheen. The development will also accommodate a new respite house for children, so urgently needed in Cork. In October 2017, it was confirmed that the HSE has provided a Capital Allocation of €2m for the new Children’s Centre. Work has now commenced on the centre and will be completed in 2019.
Once operational, the new centre will house a hydrotherapy pool, therapy rooms and sensory rooms to accommodate the needs of children with disabilities.
Enable Ireland currently has five service locations in Cork, including a hub for adults in Carrigaline.
