THE unique design and novel approach to the construction of the new, automated, storm gate harbour entrance to Cape Clear Harbour, was outlined at a presentation by the engineers in Cork this week.

John Norris, director of Malone O’Regan Consulting Engineers and Richard Browne, director of L & M Keating gave the presentation and revealed how engineering challenges associated with underwater and overwater building works were overcome.

Mr Norris was responsible for the civil and structural design, procurement, and the administration of the contract, and Richard Browne had overall responsibility for the construction of the works through his construction team.

He was design lead and co-ordinator for contractor design build and temporary works on the technically challenging project.

The €4.3m automated hydraulic storm gate is at the mouth of the North Harbour on Cape Clear, Ireland’s most southerly island, 10km off the West Cork Coast.

Our photos show the progression of this amazing feat of marine engineering.
