One of the largest and most successful Macra groups in the country, Carbery, will celebrate its 70th anniversary at the Celtic Ross Hotel on March 30th.

With 400 active members from across 13 different groups that span from Mizen to Innishannon, the region’s dinner-dance is open to all members, past and present, and promises to be an outstanding evening, worthy of the impressive milestone.

A service to remember deceased members of Carbery Macra will also take place on Friday, March 15th, at 7pm in Kilgarriffe Church, Clonakilty. The inaugural meeting of the West Cork regional executive took place on October, 26th, 1949 and Carbery Macra chairman John O’Driscoll said the essence of Macra is still the same today as it was then: ‘That is to provide young people in rural areas with an outlet to advance their knowledge and skills and improve their personal development.’

As many of clubs in the region are no longer active – at one point there were 29 – Kate O’Donovan, PRO for Carbery said they want to reach out to as many past members as possible to come along on the night. See their Facebook page for updates.

The dinner starts with a drinks reception at 7pm with music by the Uí Bhriain band and a DJ until late. Tickets are €35 and are available from John O’Driscoll 087-6901817; Cáit O’Donovan 086-2002731 and Paddy McCarthy 086-1776096.

See The Southern Star’s farming magazine on March 23rd for a special feature on Carbery Macra: past and present.
