JELLY Fish surf shop in Clonakilty has taken the top award in the Specialist Retail category in a national competition, while Skibbereen’s Abbey Furniture also got two accolades.

Now in their second year, the Irish Independent Retail Awards acknowledge the contribution the country’s independent retailers make to the economy and communities, as well as the wide range of diversity they bring to the sector.

Nollaig Hurley and her hardworking team at Jelly Fish said they are delighted with this win, which serves to underline their hard work and commitment to customer service in the challenging environment of retail.

Nollaig told The Southern Star: ‘I’m thrilled to win this award and it is testament to a great team that I am lucky to work with and also an amazing loyal customer base.

‘I’m overwhelmed by the response to the win locally and so many people have called in to congratulate us. It’s fair to say we will be celebrating this for ages.’ Trading since 2003, the business which concentrates on all things surf and swim, has flourished despite recession, disruptive road works and two episodes of serious floodings.

Abbey Furniture, a family run business at Bridge Street, actually won the Soft Furnishing Retailer of the Year award in 2018 – an honour that was bestowed upon them again this year, plus an additional award as top ‘Retailer of the Year’.

Helen Dempsey, who is an active member of the Skibbereen and District Chamber of Commerce, said the entire family are delighted with the double win.
