West Cork now boasts the South's best wedding venue, best wedding cake designer and best wedding flower supplier.

WEST Cork now boasts the South’s best wedding venue, best wedding cake designer and best wedding flower supplier.

At the recent Irish Wedding Awards held in Dublin, three major awards came to local businesses.

Best Wedding Venue in the South West went to Fernhill House Hotel in Clonakilty; Cake Designer of the Year went to Daisy Chain Cakes of Skehanore, Ballydehob while Florist of the Year went to West Cork Wedding Flowers.

Rachel Hickey of Daisy Chain Cakes said they were thrilled with the win. She used her redundancy from AIB to retrain as a confectioner and hasn’t looked back since.

Helped by her husband, dairy farmer Brian, she works out of a self-contained bakery unit where she spends an average of 20 hours on each cake.

‘It’s an intricate process. We’re best known for our variations of the classic white iced cake with iced flowers, which like a lace dress, will never date,’ said Rachel.  Meanwhile, Fernhill House Hotel posted on their Facebook page that they were delighted with their win.

‘We’re looking forward to a great year of Fernhill weddings,’ they said in a post that attracted dozens of messages of congratulations.

It was also blooming good news for West Cork Wedding Flowers. The business is run  by Skibbereen’s Catherine Twomey who has worked in the industry for more than 20 years, and who works with her sister-in-law Siobhán.
