BANTRY was well represented at the recent Irish Construction Industry Awards held in Dublin after Dermot Harrington and his team at Cook Architects picked up the Industrial Project of the Year award for the impressive Pilz building on the Model Farm Road, which was built by Bantry-based builders Murnane & O’Shea Ltd.  Pilz is a leading global automation technology company.

At a cost of €7.5m, this striking two and three storey 2,500 square metre facility is home to 125 employees and is the German company’s new software product research and development building.

Bantry native Dermot, who set up the architect practice in Cork city with Paul Carpenter at the height of the recession, now employs five people and said they are delighted with their first award for the project which started construction in November 2016.

‘We were coming out of a recession really and you don’t get that many opportunities as a young practice to work on such projects like this, so when this opportunity came up it was the first time we sort of engaged in this typology more than anything else and the clients took a chance on us and they certainly aren’t disappointed,’ Dermot told The Southern Star.

‘We finished the project in February and put a submission together for these awards and there were a number of architects on the judging panel which gives a sort of credibility to it in our opinion.’

Dermot said they developed a very strong relationship with the client and that there was a lot of trust in terms of spending €7.5m with a young Cork practice.

‘We would have also travelled to their HQ in Stuttgart and got an understanding and a feeling of the environment over there and what their end user requirements were.’

Dermot also had high praise for Murnane & O’Shea Ltd.

‘I’ve worked on a number of projects over the years with Murnane & O’Shea Ltd and they are very good competent contractors who are well aware of what they are doing.’
