Carbery JAFC champions take on Kilshannig in Sunday's Cork JAFC decider

BY SPORTS EDITOR KIERAN McCARTHY

THEY’VE been the GAA story of the season in Carbery, the underdogs that shocked the division to win the club’s first-ever Carbery Junior A Football Championship title.

This has been a dream year for St James’ GAA Club.

This is the club that has an ageing junior team that, we believed, had missed their chance to win the Carbery JAFC crown. This is the club that couldn’t field U16, minor and U21 teams this season due to a lack of numbers.

This is also the club that has won eight championship games on the bounce to reach the county JAFC final this Sunday, and en route capture the Carbery crown for the first-time ever.

St Oliver Plunkett’s, Tadhg MacCarthaigh, Argideen Rangers, Ballinascarthy, Cobh, Boherbue and St Michael’s have all tried to stop St James, and all have failed.

Now it’s Kilshannig that stand in their way in Sunday’s county final at Páirc Ui Rinn. Kilshannig are the heavy favourites. St James, again, are the underdogs, written off, but we’ve learned this season not to underestimate the Saints.

‘We never expected anything like this in all our years involved. It’s amazing for a small club, a small place, the smallest parish in West Cork and if you told me this six months ago I would have you taken away in a straight jacket,’ said club secretary Liam Evans.

This St James’ team are tremendous ambassadors for the Carbery division and they travel to Páirc Uí Rinn on Sunday with the best wishes of everyone in Carbery GAA.

Best of luck, lads.
