Battle of the brothers expected to take centre stage

REIGNING world men’s lightweight double champions Gary and Paul O’Donovan will take on club-mates Jake and Fintan McCarthy in the Men’s Division 1 double event at Skibbereen Rowing Club’s annual Grand League regatta at the National Rowing Centre, Inniscarra, this weekend, May 4th and 5th.

This will be an intriguing race between the top two lightweight doubles in the country at the moment.

Olympic silver medallists Gary and Paul will need to be at the best to hold off the twin combination of Jake and Fintan, who won a bronze medal in the lightweight men’s double at the international regatta in Piediluco, Italy, recently.

650 crews from 45 clubs, covering the entire country, will compete in over 200 races over the two days this weekend.

This is a massive sporting event for both rowers and spectators. Athletes from junior 14 to senior international world champions will be competing at the National Rowing Centre.

The Grand League regatta series was established by Rowing Ireland in 2010 and has since become the premier domestic league in Ireland contributing to the development of athletes.

Check out this week's Star Sport Podcast where Skibb and Ireland rower Denise Walsh chats about this weekend's regatta.
