DAVID Duggan of Kilmacsimon Rowing Club represented himself, his club and his country two weeks ago at the World Rowing Indoor Championships and the US Rowing National Championships, winning a bronze medal in the latter competition.

David, who began rowing with Kilmacsimon when he was just 12, beat off stiff competition from international rowers in the 500m race, pulling a personal best time of 1:23.8, and winning a bronze US Rowing National Championships medal. He also rowed a 2,000m race at the World Rowing Indoor Championships on the same day and finished tenth in his category, with a time of 6:25.8. Both events were held in Long Beach, California.

Indoor rowing races involve competing over a set distance or time on an ergometer, otherwise known as a rowing machine. It is always part and parcel of training programmes for competitive rowers, including river, coastal and offshore rowers.

David took up indoor rowing competitively in 2006 and has competed at national level on nearly a yearly basis since. In January he won the 1,000m race in the men’s 34-42 category at the Irish Indoor Rowing Championships and came second in the 2,000m race in the men’s 30-39 category. On the back of this success, he travelled to Manchester at the start of February to compete in the English Indoor Rowing Championships and rowed a personal best 2,000m time of 6:20.9, winning a bronze medal in the men’s open category.

While competitive indoor rowing takes a break over the coming months, David is now looking forward to the upcoming coastal and offshore rowing seasons with Kilmacsimon Rowing Club.
