Kilmacabea's double celebration

THE value of the GAA to the community was underlined by Paudie Palmer, special guest, at the Kilmacabea GAA victory dinner dance at the Celtic Ross Hotel, Rosscarbery last weekend.  

The genial commentator presented medals to the double-winning and back-to-back South West Cork Junior A Football Championship and League winners.  

In his address to the attendance of some 200 guests, he said, ‘Success on the pitch is great, but in reality it’s an added bonus. Often times you would hear, as was the case recently when Mullinalaghta (St Columba’s), one of the smallest clubs in Longford, won the Leinster Football Championship and TV crews descended on the place, people claimed that this victory put them on the map. I would argue and contend that GAA clubs keep places on the map as it’s what is happening in this area.’

Following the medal presentations, the club’s vice-president, Donal O’Donovan, presented the ‘Player of the Year’ award to Daniel O’Donovan; the ‘Young Player of the Year’ award to Liam McCarthy and the ‘Club Person of the Year’ award to Noel McCarthy.  

Mr Palmer concluded, ‘Success can now be measured in so many ways, my wish for the club is that somebody that is not doing something for the club right now would put themselves forward for a job because it’s a great sense of belonging.’  

Club chairperson Dan Hourihane addressed the attendance while John Keohane was master of ceremonies.
