It’s the dawn of a new sporting year, full of endless possibilities, dreams waiting to be realised and potential wanting to be filled, so we caught up with some West Cork sports people to check out their New Year’s resolutions and targets for 2018

************

‘My New Year’s resolutions are to spend less free time on my phone, try to get more caps with the Munster seniors and the As, and also to improve on performances week on week’ – Munster Rugby’s Fineen Wycherley, Bantry

‘I’ve plenty of goals for 2018 – monthly hike/mountain climb, get out on the bike more and complete Ring of Beara and Wild Atlantic Mizen cycles, discover more of the Wild Atlantic Way, remain fit and healthy by keeping the legs walked off the dog, and a golf handicap reduction would be a bonus too!’ – Munster Women’s Rugby Head Coach Laura Guest, Clonakilty

‘To surround myself with positive people, spending more time with my support team – people who where there for me when I needed them.

‘To get my body in the best shape possible to get back to the level I was playing at. I need to do everything in my power in order to achieve this, which includes strength, condition, rehab, recovery, diet and of course manage, so I don't have any setbacks. The target is to get back playing competitive football. There are challenges in the year ahead and I'm looking forward to them’ – Cork and Castlehaven footballer Brian Hurley, Union Hall

‘Over the last few years I’ve had numerous injuries so the main aim really is to stay injury free. The long-term goal is to run under 2.10 for 800m. At the moment I’m back enjoying the journey to getting back to full fitness’ – athlete Rachel O’Shea, Eyeries

‘Resolution is to visit a country I haven't been to. My main 2018 targets are to better myself as a player and get back into a junior A West Cork final with Kilmacabea’ – Kilmacabea footballer Richie O’Sullivan, Leap

‘My New Year's resolution is not let the weather affect my training regime or mindset! It's why they created jackets, hats and gloves!

‘The target is always continual improvement on and off the hockey pitch as a player and as a person. Small one per cent gains here and there make a big difference’ – Irish international hockey star Conor Harte, Kinsale

‘My target is simple, it’s to have one of my most successful years to date with both Carbery Rangers and Tipperary. Then on the personal side of things I would love to travel a bit more and to progress with work that I enjoy’ – Tipperary and Carbery Rangers footballer Robbie Kiely

‘My goals this year are to win as many national and international events as I can. I’d like to stay ranked number one in the world rankings if possible.

‘My main aim is to qualify for the WAKO European Championships in Slovenia and do well out there. Ideally I’d like to meet the Hungarian girl who beat me in Hungary at the worlds last year and come out on top this time.

‘With regards resolutions, I’m going to keep pretty much to my usual routine but drinking more water – it’s as simple as it sounds – is a small resolution for me this year’ – former world kickboxing champion Lily de la Cour, Bantry

‘Try my best for my club Gabriel Rangers and the Carbery division and be as committed as possible for each team and hopefully make a big impression to, at least, get a run with the Cork juniors and wear the red and white. I want to enjoy my football as much as possible’ – Gabriel Rangers forward Eddie Goggin

‘My New Year’s resolutions are on a personal level, one is to keep a happy diary so I can focus on the positives and get myself through the tough days and trainings. On a sporting level, I’m going to give more importance to recovery after training and matches ... to make sure I can keep up with the young ones! – Cork camogie star Leah Weste, Ballincollig

‘Turning 35 recently I have made the New Year resolution to ensure I end 2018 physically fitter than I started 2018! Physical fitness is so important and at times it is the easy option to remove from a busy work load but it is most likely the most important, so the resolution is 30 minutes of physical activity every day.

‘A personal target for 2018 is to complete the UEFA Pro Licence, which I am currently completing with the IFA in Northern Ireland’ – FAI Coach Education Manager Niall O’Regan, Bandon

‘Try and shed a few pounds after a long lay off since a very disappointing championship exit last August. Start reading a bit more; something I like doing but don't do enough. And to be more mindful of my mental wellbeing with a busy year ahead’ St Mary’s footballer Chris Daly, Enniskeane
