White smoke at last as Healy takes the Rebel football hot-seat

PEADAR Healy is the new Cork senior football manager.

The county board has confirmed this evening that the Naomh Aban clubman has taken the job on a two-year term.

He succeeds Brian Cuthbert, whose term finished after Cork were knocked out of the 2015 All-Ireland SFC by Kildare in a round four qualifier during the summer.

Healy, who has worked with both O’Donovan Rossa and Dr Crokes, was a Cork senior selector from 2008 to 2013, as the county won the 2010 All-Ireland SFC. He also acted as coach. Healy won an All-Ireland minor title with Cork in 1981.

Healy will name his backroom team in due course.

Chairman Gerard Lane commented: ‘On behalf of the County Board, I would like to wish Peader all the best in his new position. I would also like to thank all the candidates who expressed an interest in the position, and also the members of the appointments committee for their endeavours.’

John Cleary had been the front-runner for the job but, as The Southern Star exclusively revealed two weeks ago, the Castlehaven man pulled out of the job, citing time commitments. Since then several names have been linked with the vacant role, including Billy Morgan, but Healy has been chosen to lead Cork into 2016 and 2017.
