THE Southern Star and its staff have once more been shortlisted for a number of awards at the Local Ireland National Lottery Annual Media Awards.

The awards, which are exclusively for Irish regional newspapers, acknowledge the talent, commitment and skills of regional newspaper staff around the country.

This year The Southern Star has been shortlisted in a total of four categories.

News editor Siobhán Cronin’s Whiddy supplement, published on the 40th anniversary of the disaster in January, has been shortlisted for ‘Feature Story of the Year’.

In the ‘Best Use of Photography’ category, the late Bantry photographer Ian Vickery’s stark black-and-white photo of the Betelgeuse ablaze at Whiddy was selected. It was used as the main photograph on the front of the Whiddy supplement, above the headline: ‘Bantry’s Black Monday’ (see below).

An advert for SOS – the Skibbereen-based campaign to halt the proposed plastics factory in the town – was shortlisted in the Best Local Advert category.

And The Southern Star’s website southernstar.ie – managed by digital manager Jack McCarron – has been shortlisted in the Best Digital Content category. The gala awards dinner will once again take place in the Radisson Blu Hotel in Athlone on May 23rd with MC Marty Morrissey.
