An additional €700,000 for a new CT scanner has been announced for Bantry General Hospital

AN additional €700,000 for a new CT scanner has been announced for Bantry General Hospital, writes Jackie Keogh.

Former Fine Gael TD and local election candidate Noel Harrington told The Southern Star that he had received confirmation from Tony McNamara, the chief executive officer of Cork University Hospital, that the funding is to be used to enhance the radiology services at Bantry General Hospital. The first CT scanner at the hospital was purchased after the Friends of Bantry Hospital carried out a major fundraising campaign.

‘As a TD’, Mr Harrington said, ‘I had lobbied to have Bantry General Hospital developed as an outreach centre. The addition of a new CT scanner – and hopefully the appointment of two new consultant radiologists – will greatly enhance the radiology services available in West Cork.’ Mr Harrington said the €700,000 investment – which is in addition to the €5m that was recently announced for capital works at the endoscopy and rehabilitation units at the hospital – was ‘a great vote of confidence in the management and staff at Bantry General Hospital, and will copper-fasten its future.’
