Donnchadh Ó Seaghdha has been selected as the Sinn Féin local election candidate for the Bantry, West Cork electoral area.

DONNCHADH Ó Seaghdha has been selected as the Sinn Féin local election candidate for the Bantry, West Cork electoral area.

Donnchadh stood for the Bantry area also in the last local elections in 2014 when the Bantry and Skibbereen areas were amalgamated and received what he described afterwards as ‘a very creditable 1,402 votes’ staying in the race until the 9th count.

His running mate Paul Hayes was elected. Ó Seaghdha was an elected town councillor in Skibbereen from 2004 to 2014.

Presently involved in farming, Donnchadh previously worked as an apprentice shipwright with BIM in Baltimore before training as a teacher and going on to work mainly in the VEC/ Gaelcholáiste sector.

He has been involved in many high profile campaigns over the years, including fighting for the retention of rural services, such as ambulances and post offices.

On the agricultural side, he has also fought campaigns against cuts to single payments regarding land eligibility, and more recently he was part of the  farmers’ movement for sustainable prices for their beef.

He is presently chair of the Kilmichael Crossbarry Commemoration Committee at this crucial time in Irish history, with the Brexit debacle looming.

‘As we approach the centenary of those famous engagements in 2020 and 2021, more people are again looking at the real benefits a United Ireland would bring,’ he said.
