HOUSING Minister Eoghan Murphy TD officially launched Noel Harrington’s campaign for the 2019 local elections at an event in Castletownbere recently and revealed that he has Beara connections, with his maternal grandfather hailing from Adrigole.

The event, which was held at the Beara Coast Hotel in Castletownbere, was attended by over 100 supporters.

Minister Murphy was joined by his junior minister Brendan Griffin and they both gave a briefing on Brexit ahead of the launch, outlining the potential impact it will have on consumers and business owners.

Noel Harrington, who served as a Fine Gael TD for Cork South West from 2011 to 2016, stressed that the theme for his campaign is respect – ‘Respect for the candidates and the electorate.’

Speaking to The Southern Star, Mr Harrington said he has made a promise to concentrate on issues which should be Council priorities, one of which is investment in roads.

‘The Castletownbere to Glengarriff road has not had any serious investment in 10 years. This road serves, not only heavy articulated traffic for the fishing port of Castletownbere, but also local traffic and is a key route on the Wild Atlantic Way.’

He has also pledged to open an office in his hometown of Castletownbere if elected. ‘Castletownbere has never had an office for an elected representative, and I feel the town deserves it.’ Earlier in the day, Minister Murphy visited Bere Island and took part in the weekly Parkrun and was given a tour of Lonehort Battery by Bere Island Projects Group. The Battery is currently being restored as a visitor attraction. Along with Minister Griffin, he also visited Dursey Cable Car and was briefed on the major redevelopment project for Ireland’s only cable car.
