Plans are in place for the development of an all-weather sports pitch at Schull Community College

PLANS are in place for the development of an all-weather sports pitch at Schull Community College.

The new all-weather pitch has been given the green light by the Cork Education and Training Board (CETB) – the co-trustees of the school and the plan will now progress to the planning stage. With an estimated price-tag of €400,000, the pitch will not only be used by staff and students, but will be open to other clubs and organisations across the Mizen peninsula.

‘During the winter months our sports teams here at the school find it extremely difficult to train outdoors,’ deputy principal Padraig O’Sullivan told The Southern Star. ‘We know that there are many other clubs that face the same problem, and while we are at an early stage in the planning, this pitch is going to be very much a community pitch.’

‘We see the facility being available every evening after 4pm for any of the many clubs on the Mizen to use, and also for any visitors to the area that might want to take advantage of the pitch while they are here. This is a five-year plan. The school came up with the idea and, with the support of the CETB, our construction studies teacher Daniel Milliner put together the design,’ Padraig said.

The school will now apply to the sports capital grant scheme from the National Lottery and will host fundraising activities in the near future.
