Hunt to find owner of dumped car

GARDAI and the Council are trying to track the owner of a car which was stripped of its licence plate and dumped in the Argideen River last week. 

The deliberate dumping of the car in the river near Timoleague has been described as ‘outrageous’ by a local councillor.

Cork County Council confirmed that they had received a complaint from the South West Regional Fisheries Board on a recent morning and by lunchtime they had removed the red Nissan Micra.

The Council confirmed that the vehicle had its registration plates removed and its chassis number obliterated but said they were working with gardaí and are hoping to bring the culprit before the courts.

Locally-based Cllr Paul Hayes (SF) described the incident as ‘a new low’ and he praised Council staff for responding so quickly in case it polluted the drinking water for the greater Timoleague and Barryroe area.

He said: ‘The fact that the number plates had been removed to avoid the identification of its owner makes this a clear case of illegal dumping.’

A clearly angry Cllr Hayes said the incident ‘gave the two fingers’ to the local community, voluntary groups, the fisheries board, and the Council itself.

‘Voluntary groups like the Tidy Towns and the local development association in Timoleague invest a huge amount of time, week-in, week-out, only to be undermined by some yob. It is a waste of valuable Council and police time and resources trying to sort this mess out, and I can only hope that whoever is responsible will be apprehended and brought before a judge.’
