THE ESB has apologised today for a power outage in Skibbereen which saw up to 500 customers in the town centre losing power during lunchtime.

The power outage was caused by a third party hitting an ESB pole which then earthed the line, leading to a major outage, according to the ESB press office.

The outage hit the town at about 1:50pm when the businesses on Bridge Street and part of Main Street were affected. Banks were closed and many more businesses were also forced to close their doors for a portion of the afternoon.

Shortly after 3pm, the ESB confirmed that many of those affected had seen power restored, with a number more due to be connected by mid-afternoon. ‘There was a fault on the line which served about 1400 customers,’ a press officer told The Southern Star, ‘and between 400 and 500 customers were affected.’

‘The vast majority of businesses should see their power back now,’ said the spokesperson.
