FOLLOWING a warning yesterday afternoon, gardaí in West Cork are now asking people in Bantry to be on the look-out for two males calling door-to-door in the town.

The two males were spotted calling to homes of elderly people yesterday. At the time, gardaí issued a warning about a navy Citroen with Kildare 05 number plates (05 KE) in the area.

A number of people writing on the Southern Star Facebook page last night confirmed the sightings.

Today gardaí have urged the elderly – or anyone who comes into contact with strangers at their door – to use their ‘calling cards' which were distributed by gardaí and through the Community Alert schemes.

The cards encourage callers to fill out a few short details with contact information, before the homeowner engages with them.

‘Do not open the door to unknown callers,' the gardaí urged today in a statement, adding: ‘Report all suspicious activity.'

Bantry gardaí are at 027 20860.
