ÚDARÁS na Gaeltachta has congratulated Macroom Buffalo Cheese Products for winning gold at the World Cheese Awards. Údarás na Gaeltachta said its ‘client company’ in Cill na Martra scooped the award for its
Macroom Buffalo Mozzarella.

‘We are very happy to be in a position to congratulate all the team at Táirgí Cáise Buabhaill Mhaigh Chromtha on their well-deserved award,’ said Steve Ó Cúláin, chief executive, Údarás na Gaeltachta. ‘This award shows the quality of food products that can be delivered to the world stage from our Gaeltacht areas through the hard work of our producers and with the support and cooperation that Údarás na Gaeltachta can provide,’ he added.

The World Cheese Awards drew entries from 31 countries with 266 cheese experts from 26 different nations in the Basque Country to taste, nose and grade over 3,000 cheeses in a one day.

Macroom Buffalo Mozzarella is made from fresh buffalo milk produced on Johnny Lynch’s farm in Cill na Martra.  Johnny Lynch has the only milking herd of buffalo in Ireland and in 2015, having put a team together on the business side and Sean Ferry, of the renowned ‘Desmond’ and ‘Gabriel’ cheeses, on the cheese side, started producing Macroom Buffalo mozzarella at a modern purpose-built artisan cheese making premises on his farm.

Johnny Lynch now has a herd of over 200 buffalo animals on his 140-acre farm near Macroom and the animals are thriving in the Irish environment.  The company now produces a variety of cheeses including mozzarella, ricotta,  Greek-style salad cheese and haloumi at its state-of-the-art cheese production facility on the farm. The mozzarella product also won an award at the international Great Taste awards this year and supplies to Dunnes, Musgrave, Aldi, Spar and Tesco.
