House of the Week - Two homes in one, close to Ballydehob

WEST Cork has long been regarded as an area sequestered from the rest of the country, where problems and troubles can be left behind as nature is embraced.

We all have different ideas about what this might actually involve, but if a composite version of these concepts were to be realised, one would imagine that it might closely resemble ‘Lisín na Cré’.

In a wonderfully secluded location approximately three miles north-west of Ballydehob, ‘Lisín na Cré’ (it can mean ‘the cold embrace of the grave’ or ‘the little ringfort of earth’ – we’d go with the latter!) is facing due south. The idyllic property comprises a two-bedroom restored period farmhouse known as ‘The White House’, measuring about 1000 sq ft, and also a two-bedroom renovated dwelling known as ‘The Pink Cottage’. It totals roughly 800 sq ft and has been used as a self-catering holiday cottage. Both structures are set on four or so acres of the lushest gardens.

After turning off the N71 – following signposts for Glansallagh and Gortnagrough – one turns off the public road and down a private lane, immediately registering the peace and ambience of the property, which is confident enough to lack any pretensions.

Both properties have been renovated to a high standard while maintaining their period character.

A spiral staircase brings you up to two very different bedrooms, each brimming with a unique charm, while the spacious bathroom – formerly a bedroom – is equally memorable.

The smaller house is cosier, with an open-plan living area meaning that everything is to hand, while a cavernous hall leads to the bedrooms. This unique and stylish property – ideal for a retired couple with a large extended family – is a magnificent example of what can be achieved with sympathetic, thoughtful and elegant renovation and refurbishment.

Outside, the grounds have something for everybody, with a wild array of plants and flowers, as well as room to recline on a fine day. Should the mood take you, a ramble through the woodland is also possible. In close proximity to sandy beaches that are dotted along the West Cork coastline and Schull harbour, Skibbereen is approximately a 15-minute drive while Cork International Airport is 90 minutes away.
