Skibbereen's Ludgate Hub has been honoured with a prestigious SME Star Hero Award by Ireland South MEP Seán Kelly.

SKIBBEREEN’S Ludgate Hub has been honoured with a prestigious SME Star Hero Award by Ireland South MEP Seán Kelly.

The MEP made a visit to the hub last week where he met with members of the board to personally present them with the award.

Over 100 organisations were nominated by members of the European Parliament in 12 different categories, with the Ludgate Hub nominated by Sean Kelly.

‘This Skibbereen-based enterprise was an obvious choice for my SME Star Hero Award nomination. As a member of the European People’s Party SME Europe working group, I wanted to promote an initiative that shows the innovation coming from rural Ireland.

‘Ludgate Hub is a blue print for other rural areas. It received this award because of its exemplary attitude towards cross border co-operation, competition, and their potential for positive impact on the European Union’s economy,’ said the MEP.

He added: ‘Without SMEs there would be no employment, no diversity, no creativity and no quality of life. They keep the wheels of the economy turning and are keeping urban and rural life alive and vibrant in Ireland.’

Ludgate chairman John Field said the award was a great acknowledgement of the work of all involved in the hub.

‘With the grant recently secured from Enterprise Ireland’s Regional Enterprise Development Fund, we will be continuing this work over the coming years and contributing to developing a sustainable community here in West Cork,’ added Mr Field.
