CARBERY has won nine prizes in the prestigious British Cheese Awards including  being crowned Best Maker of Finest Mature Cheddar.

The DuPont Danisco Grand Prix award was given to Carbery’s Cracker  manufactured in Ballineen while they also went home with two gold, three silver and three bronze medals from the prestigious international cheese competition.

Dubliner Lighter White and Carbery Special Reserve both won gold; Dubliner Lighter White, Vintage and Mature cheddar all won silver while Red Cheddar with Chilli, Red Leicester and Mature cheese types won bronze awards in their relevant classes.

Now in its 25th year, the British Cheese Awards attracted over 1,000 entries this year. The competition is designed to highlight the quality and diversity of cheese available throughout the UK and Ireland.

These latest wins for Carbery join an already impressive number of accolades and awards for its cheese production achieved at various international competitions in recent years.

Jerry O’Sullivan, Carbery Group cheese production manager, said: ‘We are absolutely delighted to have achieved such a high success rate at this year’s British Cheese Awards, including the tightly contested Grand Prix award. The fact that we entered just 14 cheeses and won with nine of them from a field of over 1,000 entries is a wonderful testament to the superb quality of the cheeses we produce in Ballineen.’

Carbery is the largest single cheese-producing facility in the country, producing almost 25% of Ireland’s annual cheese output.

Its well-known products include the Dubliner and Carbery Cracker brands, cheddar, reduced fat cheeses and red Leicester cheese.
