BALLINEEN bullet Phil Healy reached two of her main 2018 targets before 2017 closed its doors.

The West Cork sprinter had targeted qualifying for the 2018 World Indoor Championships in Birmingham on March 1st-4th as well as the European Athletics Championships (outdoor) in Berlin next August, and in her last race of 2017 at the North West Games in Athlone, Phil set a new 400m PB of 53.15, which is a world indoor and European outdoor standard.

Phil’s previous 400m PB was 53.49 indoor, set last year, one of five new PBs she ran in 2017.

‘It was great to tick the qualifying box so early in the season and get that out of the way,’ she said. With the indoor season only beginning, this is a terrific start for the Waterford IT masters’ student. She’s currently in a block of training and her next race is at the end of the month when she’ll compete in Vienna.
