CLONAKILTY have the ability to make a big impression in the county series, according to team trainer Sean Twomey, who joined the coaching set-up for the 2017 campaign.

Highly-experienced Twomey had overseen Newcestown’s intermediate hurling success two years ago and brought a wealth of experience and a new and more professional approach to the Clon hurling scene.

‘The talent was there,’ a cool, collected Twomey said after the game on Sunday.

‘There were some very good young players, like Cork U21 player David Lowney, coming through who had great success at underage. It was just a matter of bringing freshness to the whole thing, of changing what needed to be changed, a new voice.

‘We weren’t able to play as many matches as we would have liked because of the football commitments but we had great numbers at hurling training.

‘There is a super management team in place, all driven to do their best for Clon hurling.’

After winning their second South West title in three years, the 16th in the history of the club since the first in 1939, attention now turns to the county series. Clon have never won the county title, contesting only one final in 1946. Twomey feels they will give it a rattle.

‘Clon have as good a chance as any team left in the championship,’ Twomey said.

‘It’s a new championship this season, 14 teams, winners and losers from each division. That will make it harder to win but it’s really a matter of playing your best hurling for the full hour.

‘If we can repeat the first-half form tonight for a full hour, very few teams would match us. The lads are very fit, well conditioned and it’s all a matter of consistency now.

‘The experience against Cloughduv two years ago will definitely stand to them. There’s also the U21 football to be fitted in, of course, but if we bring our best game to the table each time, there’s no reason we can’t go all the way in the county.’
