Douglas man handed three-year term to ressurect Rebels

RONAN McCARTHY is the ‘ideal choice' as Cork senior football coach, according to county board chairman Ger Lane.

Douglas man McCarthy has been handed a three-year term.

He takes over from former manager Peadar Healy whose two-year term ended after Cork's exit from the All-Ireland SFC last month.

‘The experience Ronan has at club and county level made him an ideal choice for this demanding role,' Ger Lane said.

‘He has been immersed in club and county football since his playing days ended and is well qualified to take this position.'

A Cork GAA statement read: ‘Former Cork minor and senior footballer McCarthy is hugely experienced, having first served as a selector under Conor Counihan in 2013 before his services were retained by Brian Cuthbert in 2014 and 2015.

‘The Glanmire Community College principal, coached Douglas to a county final appearance in 2008, and in 2016 he led Carbery Rangers to win their first ever county senior football championship.

‘During his playing career with the Rebels, which spanned the 1990s and 2000s, he won two Munster medals and a league title; he also played at corner back in the 1999 All-Ireland Final defeat to Meath. He was a member of the 1991 All-Ireland winning Cork minor panel.'

New Cork coach McCarthy will appoint his management team in the coming days, and this will be announced in due course.
