STAR-STUDDED Carbery showed they have the potential to be real contenders in the SE Systems Cork camogie senior championship after they recorded a 35-point win over senior debutants Mallow in their round one game in Coachford on Sunday evening.

Carbery, with the pick of every team in the division at their disposal, lined out with an impressive array of players that feature on the inter-county scene.

Indeed it was Cork and Enniskeane player Orla Cronin that got proceedings underway when she pointed a 20-metre free inside the opening minute. Four minutes later she split posts before pointing again after a Libby Coppinger pass set her up to slot over. When Colette Desmond goaled after Clara Crowley's effort was saved, Carbery were already 1-3 to 0-0 ahead, and by half time the lead had swelled to 2-12 to 0-1.

Caroline Sugrue hit 1-3, Cronin scored four points and Caroline Murphy hit two more as Carbery powered in front.

Five unanswered Carbery points within 13 minutes of the restart through Sugrue, Clara Crowley, Desmond (2) and Cronin saw Carbery 2-17 to 0-01 ahead before Sugrue struck for goal after 44 minutes.

Mallow, having accounted for Valley Rovers in last year's senior B final to move up to the top grade of camogie in Cork, found the going tough but they must be commended in never giving up and remaining resolute as they grappled to come to terms with a very strong side.

But Carbery were far too strong and Enniskeane's Orla Cronin scored her side's fourth goal as they eased into round two.
