2000 athletes to compete in huge event at the National Rowing Centre

OLYMPIC silver medallists’ Gary and Paul O’Donovan will be the star attractions at the Skibbereen Grand League Regatta 2017 this weekend.

The Skibbereen Rowing Club international stars will compete in the Skibbereen RC regatta at the National Rowing Centre in Farran Wood – on this Saturday and Sunday – which is part of the Rowing Ireland Grand League Regatta Series.

Also Olympians Sanita Puspure and Claire Lambe will be action in this first domestic regatta of the season, as well as other international high performance rowers, with almost 700 crews and 2000 athletes – from junior 14 to senior – competing this weekend.

Races will run every four minutes.

This is a mammoth event to organise and takes up to 100 volunteers to successfully run it each year. The logistics are considerable as timing from heats determines placing in A, B or C final.

The Grand League was established by Rowing Ireland in 2010 and has since become the premier domestic league in Ireland, contributing to the development of numerous athletes at both junior and senior level.
