Aisha follows in her mum's footsteps for African trip

A Rosscarbery girl is looking for a builder to give her a crash course in bricklaying, cement mixing and other basic construction tasks ahead of a fundraising trip to Zambia. 

A family trip to Rwanda inspired 16-year-old Aisha Devoy of Bandon Grammar school to get involved with charity, Habitat for Humanity,  who will  build two houses in the central Zambian city of Kabwe.

Aisha, and other Bandon Grammar students, will live on simple foods and without the standard western mod-cons of showers or mobile phone, spending 10 days on-site to build the houses.

Aisha will be following the  path of her mother, Sara Devoy, who spent nine months doing charity work in Kenya in 1981, when she was 18. Aisha is currently fundraising ahead of her trip: on April 19th there will be a flag day in Skibbereen along with Bingo at the Parish Centre in Clonakilty, and a raffle, at 3pm on April 22nd. A coffee morning in Clonakilty Parochial Hall will be held on May 5th from 10am to 1pm. 

Habitat for Humanity is an international, not-for-profit organisation. The main ethos of the organisation is ‘a hand up, not a hand-out,’ They are devoted to, not only building houses, but also with building a sense of community and self-esteem within the most disadvantaged communities of the  developing world.

Aisha said: ‘My goal is to raise €2,900 by May 30th. This includes the cost of building materials, and my donation to the charity. Any donations big or small would be greatly appreciated.’
