A SKIBBEREEN man has been honoured for rowing in behind a programme which mentors young people on probation for the past 10 years.

Mick McCabe, partner of Trish O’Donovan who is mum to Olympic heroes Gary and Paul, was recognised for his 10 years as a volunteer with Le Chéile.

Mick was presented with a special award for his decade of service at a ceremony which marked the organisation’s 10-year anniversary.

A recent evaluation found the organisation’s mentoring has reduced youth reoffending by 28%.

The ‘Reducing Youth Crime in Ireland’ report is based on a detailed evaluation of the Le Chéile volunteer mentoring programme and it found that for every euro spent on the programme, €4.35 is returned in social and economic benefits.

Guest of honour at the anniversary event was junior minister David Stanton TD, who presented a long term service award to Mick in honour of his contribution.

Le Chéile is funded by the Irish Youth Justice Service through the Probation Service, as part of Ireland’s European Structural and Investment Funds Programme 2014-2020, which is co-funded by the Irish Government and the European Union.
