A ROSSCARBERY man who came to aid of several motorists stranded after hitting an enormous pothole at Gaggin Cross, outside Bandon, has been hailed a hero and a true gentleman.

But modest mechanic Brian O’Mahony said he’d like to think someone else would do the same if his wife found herself in the same situation.

As reported in The Southern Star last week, Brian, who works at nearby Finbarr Galvin Ltd, went out of his way to help motorists repair punctures after encountering a large pothole last Friday week.

Speaking to The Southern Star,  Brian said he wouldn’t want to see anyone stuck on the road that wet evening in what he described as dangerous conditions.‘I actually thought there was a crash as there were so many cars pulled in. I wasn’t the only one who helped motorists, and I’d like to think that if my wife was in same situation that someone would stop to help her,’ said Brian.

The husband of one woman who Brian helped said he was a ‘true gentleman.’ ‘He pulled in and helped my wife and took her tyre away and replaced it with a spare he had. He then repaired her tyre and brought it back to her the next day and wouldn’t accept any payment,’ said the man who preferred not to give his name.

‘He is a true gentleman and both my wife and I are delighted that he got coverage for his good deed.’

Liadain O’Driscoll, who was also assisted by Brian, and who spoke to The Southern Star  last week, hopes to thank him in person shortly.
