A LONG term investment plan for Bandon, comprising the Northern Relief Road and new bridge, has been shortlisted for two national planning awards.

Cork County Council’s Transport and Public Realm Enhancement Plan (TPREP) for Bandon has been shortlisted in the plan-making and design categories at the upcoming Irish Planning Institute Awards.

In their 10th year, they highlight innovation and achievement on both a national and international basis.

Chief executive of Cork County Council Tim Lucey credited the skill and creativeness of the project staff: ‘Achieving such recognition from the Irish Planning Institute demonstrates our commitment to achieving excellence in urban regeneration and transportation planning, specifically to the town of Bandon in terms of its future once the flood relief scheme and sewerage network upgrades at complete.’

The development of the relief road and bridge are seen as key to unlocking development sites north of the river where a significant amount of land is zoned for housing, new educational facilities and employment uses. This would be a significant benefit to the town, but also the wider rural hinterland. The timeline for the implementation of the plan is being co-ordinated with flood relief works and waste water network upgrades in the town centre so as to minimise disruption to traders.

County mayor Declan Hurley congratulated all involved in the project. The project team crossed a range of Council staff, from urban design to engineering, architecture to conservation. The project team also provided leadership on the scope of the project working with engineering consultants Systra and JB Barry Consultants.  Extensive consultation with the community, local schools, stakeholders in the town and councillors from the Bandon Kinsale Municipal District was also vital.

Winners will be announced at the Irish Planning Institute awards dinner in Dublin next month.
