FIANNA Fáil Leader Micheál Martin TD has expressed his sympathy following the death of a former councillor and colleague, Dan R Harrington.

Deputy Martin said Dan R Harrington, who passed away peacefully at home in Ardgroom on the Beara Peninsula on Tuesday, was ‘quite simply a legend in West Cork.’

From early on Wednesday afternoon people gathered in their hundreds to pay their last respects to a man that Deputy Martin described as ‘one of life’s great characters.’

He will be missed by his loving wife Mary (nee McCarthy), as well as his children Michael, Barry, Donal, Florence, Mary, Noralene, John Martin, Angela (O’Donoghue) and Brenda and all his loving family including 22 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Dan Harrington was a former County Council member, chairman of the Southern Health Board, and prominent figure in the local GAA.

‘He brought great energy and enthusiasm to everything he did – whether it was his years of public service as a Fianna Fáil representative and member of the health board, his role as an entrepreneur on the Beara Peninsula, or as a loving husband to Mary and father to his nine children. He was deeply rooted in his community and had a deep sense of place.  He was always a fearless advocate for both,’ said Deputy Martin.
