A West Cork journalist has won the Showbiz Story of the Year award at the NewsBrands Ireland Journalism Awards 2017 and The Southern Star's sports editor was shortlisted at the same awards.
A WEST CORK journalist has won the Showbiz Story of the Year award at the NewsBrands Ireland Journalism Awards 2017 and The Southern Star’s sports editor was shortlisted at the same awards.
At a special ceremony in Dublin’s Mansion House last Thursday, Skibbereen native Nadine O’Regan was presented with her award by NewsBrands Ireland chairman Vincent Crowley.
Nadine, daughter of the late Liam O’Regan, former editor of The Southern Star, and Mrs Maeve O’Regan of Abbeystrewry, is the arts editor of the Sunday Business Post.
She won the Showbiz Story of the Year award for her article on Neil Jordan’s decision to distance himself from the Sky drama Riviera, which he had been credited with co-writing with author John Banville.
According to the judges, ‘a great showbiz story is about dodging the PR spin and getting the gossip straight from the horse’s mouth. It’s also about being brave enough to fire that killer question and being lucky enough to get that enviable scoop in return, which is why the Showbiz Story of the Year goes to Nadine O’Regan of the Sunday Business Post.’
Last month Nadine took second position in the 2017 IMRO Radio Awards in the Specialist Music Programme category for her Songs in the Key of Life music show on Today FM.
Meanwhile, Southern Star sports editor Kieran McCarthy was one of four journalists shortlisted for the 2017 Regional Journalist of the Year award at the NewsBrands awards.
Kieran was the only regional sports journalist in Ireland to be nominated for this award, which was won by news reporter Sorcha Crowley of The Sligo Champion.
‘It’s great recognition for The Southern Star and our sports coverage to make the final four and it highlights, again, how our love of, and commitment to, West Cork sport is unrivalled throughout the country,’ Kieran said.
Kerry native McCarthy already won the Local Ireland Sports Story of the Year award in May for his quality coverage of the continued success of the O’Donovan brothers, Gary and Paul, and their rowing exploits.
