A SUPERLOO in Bandon is leaving the Council short after it was revealed that it costs them almost  €37,000 a year to maintain.

At a recent meeting of Bandon Kinsale Municipal District, Council official Mac Dara O h-Icí told members that there are three public conveniences in Bandon but that the superloo at Ballymodan Place was proving to be the most expensive to maintain, at an annual cost of €36,864. He also revealed that the combined income for all three toilets in Bandon this year, at 25 cents per use, is just €288, while last year’s figure was €336.

‘The superloos were seen to be the bee’s knees at the time and while they provide a good service they are proving costly to maintain. At the time they came in we had to sign up for long term contracts. There are actually three in Bandon with two at the fishmarket, including a disabled one and a general one, which are under a different contract. They are cheaper to maintain than this one as they are a built in unit, ‘ said Mr O h-Icí.

‘We had to sign up for contracts for all three in Bandon and we have an opportunity now before the end of November to give 18 months’ notice to finish that contract for the Ballymodan superloo. If not it  will automatically roll over for another five year contract.’ Cllr Kevin Murphy (FG)  said that the superloos are costing an absolute fortune and that the Council should terminate the contract on the Ballymodan convenience.

Cllr Rachel McCarthy (SF) quipped that she would clean it herself such was the cost of maintaining it.
