LETTER: Growing his own cannabis

LETTER: Growing his own cannabis

Send your letters to editorial@southernstar.ie

SIR – On November 14th, 2017 I’ll be committed to prison for growing and smoking my own cannabis. Instead of accepting this sentence, I’ve decided to refuse prison food and go on hunger strike.

I intend for the hunger strike to continue until I’m released from prison or the government repeals the 1977 Misuse of Drugs Act and the 1984 Misuse of Drugs Act.

I’ve already written to my local TDs and I’m now asking for public support of my position that: Cannabis is less harmful than alcohol or tobacco; criminalising cannabis causes more harm than legal cannabis; the cannabis industry could be worth €1 billion a year to the Irish economy and 15,000 jobs.

Growing and smoking your own cannabis can’t be a crime because nobody is harmed by it. Nor is there even the potential for any harm to be done to anyone for any reason.

Yours Sincerely,

John O’Regan,

Kilkee,

Co Clare.
