Anger as Taoiseach targeted in homophobic graffiti

HOMOPHOBIC graffiti, which refers to the Taoiseach as the ‘shame of Ireland', has been posted on an archway in Clonakilty.

Gardaí confirmed that a concerned citizen notified them about the graffiti, which has since been removed, and which they say is being investigated as an act of criminal damage.

And a spokesperson said that in situations where the content is deemed offensive, it could be considered as an offence under the Incitement to Hatred Act.

Local businessman, Ger Harte, who owns Harte's Courtyard where the graffiti appeared, confirmed that a similar comment was posted on a white ESB box last week and that it was removed using white spirts.

However, two comments were put up on Sunday night or Monday morning which were written with permanent marker.

He said both boxes, which are located in the archway leading to Harte's Courtyard off Rossa Street in the award-winning town, have since been painted over.

On one of the two panels, it said: ‘Leo shame of Ireland' and on the other it incorrectly spelled the Taoiseach's surname name and said: ‘Vardakar gay man shame on yourself.' And, in the corner, it said: ‘Real IRA.' 

Mr Harte said: ‘I am completely disgusted with this graffiti and the content of the graffiti. I don't think it is malicious. I think it is the work of someone who has nothing else to be doing.'
