As the Sea Fisheries Protection Authority marks the 10th anniversary of its establishment, the sea-fisheries regulator has begun recruiting to fill a range of new and existing positions at its Clonakilty headquarters.

AS the Sea Fisheries Protection Authority marks the 10th anniversary of its establishment, the sea-fisheries regulator has begun recruiting to fill a range of new and existing positions at its Clonakilty headquarters.  

Current available positions include director of finance and director of human resources, with further posts expected to be advertised shortly. 

Ireland's authority for sea fisheries protection and seafood safety, the SFPA is responsible for ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation. Its remit includes all fishing vessels operating within Ireland's 200 mile limit, over 2,000 Irish registered fishing vessels wherever they operate and all seafood produced in Ireland's 170 seafood processing companies.

Beara native Dr Susan Steele, chair of the SFPA, says this is an exciting time to join the organisation. ‘Ireland's seafood industry continues to flourish with new markets opening across the world and existing markets are continuing to grow,' she said. ‘Good regulation is pivotal to realising the shared visions for the development of the industry through supporting the sustainable development of Ireland's marine resources and ensuring consumers across the world continue to enjoy Irish seafood of the highest quality, safely.'

 The SFPA currently employs over 80 people between its Clonakilty HQ and its offices in Castletownbere, Dingle, Ros a Mhil, Killybegs, Howth and Dunmore East.  

Its scope of work includes detecting and deterring illegal fishing, verifying consignments for the export market and carrying out approval inspections and audits of all food businesses within the sector.  

The SFPA is the authority for the classification of shellfish production areas and implements the National Marine Biotoxin Monitoring programme with the Marine Institute and Molluscan Shellfish Safety Committee.
