BANDON gardaí were left in the shade by members of their community who visited them as part of a national initiative.

Headed up by community garda Damian White, they assisted with Job Shadow Day as part of National Supported Week.

This brings people with disabilities and local employers together to highlight the valuable contribution people with disabilities can and do make at work.

This initiative gives people with disabilities an opportunity that they may otherwise never experience.

Over the course of two days, eight attendees from the Rosmini Centre in Bandon participated in the initiative in Bandon Garda Station. The centre provides services to adults over 18 years with intellectual difficulties. It provides educational supports, occupational services, and sheltered employment opportunities to its clients. The Centre also incorporates a personal and social development aspect to its services.

All participants received a full guided tour of the garda station, with demonstrations of the equipment and facilities available to the gardaí.

Garda White said that ‘it was very worthwhile to be able to be involved in this initiative, as it allows An Garda Síochána to build positive relationships with vulnerable groups.’

He added: ‘The feedback from the participants was excellent, and it was lovely to see how small gestures can have such a rewarding and uplifting effect.’

It is planned to repeat the involvement of An Garda Síochána again in the coming  years.
