A RANDOM photograph of a young boy holding a Fields shopping bag in a snow-covered car park in Calgary has started a new Facebook trend.

In March, Veronica Crowley sent a photograph of Alex Crowley, the son of Claire Crowley of Skibbereen, to Pauline Collins who works in Fields SuperValu in Skibbereen. In it, Alex is holding one of the trademark green grocery bags.

Pauline promptly put it on Facebook and the photograph got a load of ‘likes’. Then, Alice McCutcheon, who was visiting from Dubai, posted a photograph of her Fields bag at the base of the Burj, the world’s tallest building. And others soon followed.

Up until now, there had been just a cluster of far-flung images posted on the supermarket’s Facebook page, but the decision to turn it into a competition has resulted in lots of local people buying the bags specially to send to friends and family abroad.

Anyone with a photograph of one of the trademark green bags can post it to Fields of Skibbereen Facebook page to be in with a chance of winning a €200 shopping voucher.

Adam Walsh, general manager of Fields, told The Southern Star: ‘We have always been aware of customers and visitors bringing Field’s bags all around the world, carrying with them memories of their trips to Skibbereen.

‘Social media now allows us to see evidence of this and we are delighted with the feedback and engagement from our customers.’

He said he has even had a picture from Mount Toubkal, the highest mountain in North Africa, with a man from Baltimore eating his sandwiches out of a Fields bag at the 4,000m summit.
