BANTRY Bay’s potential to enhance and develope sustainable tourism sector will be discussed at a free public meeting at the Maritime Hotel next week.

As part of the nationwide Biodiversity Week, Karin Dubsky of CoastWatch Ireland will open the event with an examination of the wide variety of activities available locally to tourists and locals.

From kayaking, angling, diving and sailing, Karin will look at these leisure activities, and the potential for future tourism development, while taking into account the perspective of local fishermen, tourism operatives, communities and the environmental impact, if any, to the coastline of Bantry Bay.

Karin was featured recently on RTÉ’s Eco Eye TV series regarding the large-scale proposal to harvest kelp in Bantry Bay.

A local group of concerned residents and fishermen have called on the Minister for Housing, Simon Coveney, to withdraw the harvesting licence until an environmental impact statement is completed and a public hearing into the harvesting is carried out.

Following the meeting on Monday May 22nd at 2pm at the Maritime Hotel in Bantry, there will be a ‘Fieldtrip on Land and Sea’ leaving from Adrigole Pier by kayaks and canoes. There will also be an opportunity to go snorkelling.

Tickets for the Fieldtrip cost €5 and booking is essential as places are limited.
