Fire crews are working to prevent the fire entering a 350 acre forestry.

The scenic tourist spot of Gougane Barra is under threat as an illegal gorse fire continues to burn on the hillside.

Teams of West Cork fire fighters, as well as crews from Kerry, worked to contain a blaze that they have described as significant.

It is understood that the fire – an illegal gorse fire that was set after the March 1st burning deadline – was started two days ago, but parts of the hillside proved inaccessible to the fire fighting crews.

The crews are now working to prevent the fire from entering a 350 acre forestry in the area.
