A NEW and unique challenge has been devised by the Rosscarbery Business Association in conjunction with Rosscarbery Steam Runners AC called the Rosscarbery Surf, Turf ‘n’ Tar race.

The multi-terrain race offers competitors the opportunity to experience either a 10k or half-marathon, through some of the most challenging and beautiful beach, road, forest and trail landscapes in West Cork.

‘Both races start at 9am on May 20th down at the Pier Road (across from the Celtic Ross Hotel in Rosscarbery), and participants will cross over the estuary via a pontoon, onto the Warren Beach – the first of three beaches,’ organiser Geoff Wycherley told The Southern Star.

The runners then head for the newly re-surfaced cliff walk into Owenahincha, where they will run through Owenahincha and make their way to Castlefreke Estate.

‘The 10k runners will loop around the castle and return to Rosscarbery via the Cliff Walk and finish on the Warren Road.  The half-marathon route leaves the castle grounds and enters wood trails recently completed by Coillte, which include Ladies Walk and Kilkern Lake,’ Geoff continued. ‘The runners then take on the Long Strand, extending just over one mile of beach running, and then onto the trail leading to Lord Carbery Cross, where they can see out to the Galley Head and look back on the challenging beach run they have just completed. The race then goes back via the castle, through Owenahincha, running the beach, over the Cliff Walk and across the Warren Strand and onto the finish on the Warren Road.’

The cost to take part in the 10k is €25, while the half marathon is €35.

Registration, at rosscarbery10kandhalfmarathon.itsyourrace.com, closes on April 30th.
