Bandon hospital works progress

THE HSE has confirmed that the new bedrooms in Bandon Community Hospital are expected to be completed by the end of July, with final works expected to be finished by October.

Work on the upgrade of the hospital began last September with €3.44m allocated to totally upgrade and reconfigure all facilities at the hospital. 

Once completed, the hospital will boast 25 beds, of which 80% will be single ensuite rooms to the HIQA standard, 21 single ensuite rooms and two twin ensuite rooms. 

There will also be an increased communal space, two small meeting rooms, a new assisted bathroom and shower room as well as a palliative care room and two outdoor areas which will enclosed and secure. The works are being undertaken by local West Cork contractor Murnane & O’Shea and delays in these timelines are not anticipated.

Cork South West TD Jim Daly welcomed the continuing developments in the hospital.

‘It is expected that the new section of bedrooms will be completed by the end of July. This will bring Bandon Community Hospital back to the original compliment of 22 beds, plus an additional three new beds. On completion of the bedrooms the next phase will be the refurbishment of the entrance area and the commencement of the construction of a new day room with a projected completion date at the end of October 2017,’ said Deputy Daly.

‘The hospital is a crucial component for the local community and provides an extensive variety of services for the older people of Bandon town and its surrounding areas. This build will have a hugely positive impact on the staff, residents and their families alike.’
