SHERKIN is preparing for an influx of visitors as the conferring of awards for the Dublin Institute of Technology’s (DIT) BA in Visual Art graduation ceremony takes place on the island.

Family and friends of the 17 graduating students will make their way to the island on Friday March 24th for the 2pm ceremony.

The Sherkin Island Community Hall will host the event, and it also serves as the students’ campus on the island during term-time.

Sherkin Island Development Society, the Dublin Institute of Technology and West Cork Arts Centre are pleased to announce that the final year students from the BA in Visual Art Programme will be conferred with their degrees by Dr Michael Mulvey, Director of Academic Affairs and Registrar at DIT.

The event will also be attended by various local community and government representatives, including special guests Bertie O’hAinmhire of the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs and Cllr Declan Hurley, deputy mayor of Cork county.

The ongoing funding support of the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs and Cork County Council enabled a further group of students to begin their four-year degree on Sherkin Island last September.

The programme is specifically tailored to allow access to third level education to geographically disadvantaged, mature students who would otherwise have to leave their local community, while bringing social, economic and cultural benefits to Sherkin Island.

It aims to add to the quality of life of the island residents and to the island economy during the traditionally quiet winter months.

The 17 graduating are Deirdre Buckley Cairns, Lesley Cox, Lucy Cox, Joe Davis, Jean Dunne, Monica Dunne, Ellès Innemee, Deirdre Leddin, Brigid O’Connell Madden, Clare McLaughlin, Daireen McMullan, Donal O’Connor, Marika O’Sullivan, Detlef Schlich, Philomena Smith, Ben Townsend and Ciara Ward.

The BA (hons) in Visual Art is fully accredited, managed and delivered by the Dublin School of Creative Arts, Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) in partnership with Sherkin Island Development Society (SIDS) and Uillinn: West Cork Arts Centre, and is part-funded by the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs and Cork County Council.
