A former FG councillor has been ‘returned to the fold’ of Cork County Council, following a decision to allow him take the seat vacated by Cllr Noel O’Donovan this year.

A FORMER FG councillor has been ‘returned to the fold’ of Cork County Council, following a decision to allow him take the seat vacated by Cllr Noel O’Donovan this year.

After Cllr O’Donovan left to join An Garda Siochána, John O’Sullivan from Courtmacsherry threw his hat in the ring.

And at a Co-Option Selection Convention held in Dunmanway last Friday night, O’Sullivan was selected for the seat West Cork Municipal District.

‘I am delighted to welcome Cllr John O‘Sullivan back into the fold of Cork County Council, to fill the vacancy left by Noel O’Donovan who stood down earlier this year,’ said Sen Tim Lombard.

As a former deputy mayor, John O’Sullivan is well equipped to take on the role, said Sen Lombard. ‘He served for five years as a county councilor, acquiring great knowledge and experience throughout. I have every confidence in his integrity, his understanding of the system, and his ability to be an effective councillor once again,’ he added.

‘I wish John and his wife Deirdre all the best entering this new phase, confident in the capabilities John brings with him to make positive contributions to Cork county,’ he said.

Sen Lombard also said that former Cllr Noel O’Donovan was ‘conscientious’ and showed great dedication in his role as a county councilor. ‘I have no doubt he will prevail in his pursuit of a career in the gardaí, with which I wish him well,’ he added.

Cllr Michael Hegarty (FG) formally proposed John O’Sullivan’s co-option at the meeting of Cork County Council on Monday in County Hall.

Party colleague Cllr Mary Hegarty from Bantry seconded the proposal, saying she was delighted to welcome him back.

Cllrs Declan Hurley and Paul Hayes said they, too, were pleased to have ‘the full complement of councillors’ back in West Cork.
