BOT believes everyone can exercise – that’s the message that is coming out loud and clear from the weekly Bantry Operation Transformation (BOT) meetings.

BOT believes everyone can exercise – that’s the message that is coming out loud and clear from the weekly Bantry Operation Transformation (BOT) meetings.

Dr Gitte Wieneke, a GP and BOT team member, said: ‘Any exercise is better than none, and every little counts towards developing a healthier you.

‘Even five minutes a day is a good start, but we should aim to build up to 30 minutes of exercise five times a week,’ said Dr Wieneke, who is delighted that there are more than 100 people taking part in the Bantry initiative.

This week, the BOT participants took part in a free yoga session with Maeve Murphy, who is a qualified yoga teacher and team member.

At every Monday meeting night there is a free fitness session that is open to all and the organisers say: ‘It is not too late to get involved.’ Most people when they think of exercise they think of running, walking, cycling and circuit training – all of which sound daunting if you haven’t moved for quite some time.

That’s why the gentle introduction at the BOT meetings are so encouraging. It gets you started.

Lorraine Geaney, a practice nurse at the Glengarriff Medical Centre, recommends you add exercise incrementally to your day – it can be anything from standing up and walking on the spot during the ad breaks. The key is to start and built it up slowly. You can also check out the BOT walking planner on the Bantry Active Facebook if you’d like some company while you walk.

For more inspiration and advice about how to exercise whatever your ability go to next Monday night’s meeting and hear Jerry Boyle, BOT team member, give a talk about exercises you can do at home.
