IF paint which was used to vandalise four location signs near Ballydehob cannot be removed, it will cost Cork County Council well over €500 to replace the signs themselves.

The signs were vandalised in recent months when someone daubed them with red paint, obliterating the words ‘Schull’ and ‘Ballydehob’ and totally destroying a large Ballydehob Community Alert sign.

A local Garda spokesperson told The Southern Star that the signposts, which are located between Gloun and Shantullig, had not come to their attention, nor had they received any notifications or complaints from any motorists, locals or indeed from Cork County Council.

‘We understand that the signposts have been in this condition for some months. The County Council would usually inform us when property such as road signs had been vandalised or damaged. As such, we are not investigating the matter at this time.’

Strangely, the lone Bantry sign seems to have escaped the wrath of the spray paintcan wielder.

A spokesperson for Cork County Council told The Southern Star that the Council had indeed ‘noted this damage had taken place’.

They added: ‘The signage will be taken down and attempts made to try and remove the paint. Should this not be possible and three new signs are required, costs will be in the region of €450 plus VAT.’

A bizarre message – ‘Time Decision Time ML’ – has also been scrawled on the road surface at the same junction.
