COUNTY Mayor Cllr Seamus McGrath and the  chief executive of Cork County Council, Tim Lucey, launched the Cork Age Friendly Towns initiative in County Hall.

Informed by the very successful Kinsale Age Friendly Town pilot project, the Cork Age Friendly County Programme is running an initiative to develop a network of three further Age Friendly Towns within the county.

The programme is seeking interested groups to submit applications for selection as the next Age Friendly Town. One town in each of the divisions will be selected and funding of €5,000 will be made available to support the introduction of age friendly initiatives in the towns. Administrative support will be provided by the Cork County Age Friendly Programme for the selected towns.

The objective is to significantly improve the quality of life of older adults living in the towns and to engage them in shaping and enhancing the own communities. Criteria that will support a successful application include: the availability of engaged volunteer groups with ideas for age friendly projects; the commitment of a named champion amongst the group/s to part drive the process, and the willingness of local key professionals/agencies to participate in the consultation planning and implementation process.

Closing date for applications is January 31st with successful towns embarking on the programme in February.
